2011 Second Harvest Holiday Food and Fund Drive Kick-Off

As a 2010 Second Harvest Freedom From Hunger Blue Diamond award winner, Sterling is excited to share in the announcement of the official kick-off of the 2011 Second Harvest Holiday Food and Fund Drive. The food bank’s goal is to raise $11.3 million dollars and 1.6 million pounds of food. Taking the lead this year are Holiday Food and Fund Drive Co-Chairs Mike Klayko, CEO of Brocade, and Jed York, president and CEO of the San Francisco 49ers.

According to Second Harvest Food Bank – which serves Santa Clara and San Mateo counties in the San Francisco Bay Area and a Sterling client – one out of every 10 area residents will be receiving food from Second Harvest Food Bank this holiday season. The number of people Second Harvest feeds each month has increased 48 percent since the start of the recession in 2007. The Food Bank currently feeds about 250,000 people in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties every month.

“Even in the heart of the Silicon Valley, which prides itself on collaboration and innovation, hunger has become a serious problem in our surrounding community,” York said. “People who never thought they would need help are now turning to Second Harvest Food Bank for assistance. We are fortunate to live in a community where people work together and help each other prosper, so it’s only fitting that our local corporations get involved and help those who are less fortunate. I strongly urge business leaders in our surrounding community to join me and take action to support Second Harvest Food Bank’s Holiday Food and Fund Drive.”

“Second Harvest Food Bank has managed to meet the rising need for food despite the growing challenges,” said Kathy Jackson, CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. “We depend on the generous support of the community to make sure our neighbors have enough to eat. Every dollar donated to the Food Bank provides two meals. It is unacceptable that in a wealthy community like ours, 1 in 4 people are struggling to put food on the table.”

Corporations, organizations and individuals can get involved by hosting a food drive or donating to Second Harvest Food Bank this holiday season. Visit www.shfb.org. You can also donate online or by calling 866. 234.3663. Stamp Out Hunger this Saturday!

As readers of our blog, you may know that fighting hunger is a cause near and dear to our hearts. We regularly work with Second Harvest Food Bank – a stellar organization and Sterling client – in the South San Francisco Bay Area, as well as with other food banks in our markets across the country.

This Saturday, May 14th is the annual Letter Carriers’ Food Drive, Stamp Out Hunger. It’s easy to participate in the largest one-day food drive in the nation.

Here’s how you can help Stamp Out Hunger:

  1. Bag non-perishable food items*
  2. Leave the bag by your mailbox before mail delivery
  3. Your letter carrier will collect your donation and deliver it to the Food Bank

*Donate items like canned meats, fish, soup, vegetables, bottled juice, pasta, cereal and rice that do not require refrigeration and that have not expired or are in glass containers.

Get more information, watch videos, print money-saving coupons on food items, and more at HelpStampOutHunger.com.

Second Harvest reports they received over 391,000 pounds of food from the 2010 Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. That equals over 300,000 meals or almost 20 semi trucks full of food.

Imagine the impact we can make if each person reading this blog donates one bag of food – and tells 5 friends to donate too! You can use the sharing icons below to quickly and easily share this blog post, or visit StampOutHunger.com for more ways to spread the word.

Second Harvest Food Bank’s Freedom From Hunger Awards

We are pleased to announce that Sterling Health Services Administration received a Blue Diamond award in the Second Harvest Food Bank 20th Annual Freedom From Hunger Awards.

The Food Bank reports that 2010 marked the most successful year in their history. Sterling is proud to have played a part in the combined efforts of more than 2,000 food and fund drives alongside other such notable companies and fellow Blue Diamond award winners as UPS, Target, Pillsbury, Google, and more.

Along with our fabulous Facebook fans, Sterling donated more than one ton of food during our Cans for Fans Event last summer. You can see photos from donation day here on our Facebook Page.

We so enjoyed the experience of giving back to our community that we decided to do it again! As a way of saying thanks to our producer partners and our clients this past holiday season, Sterling and our employees donated food and funds not only to Second Harvest but also to four other food banks in our markets across the country. You can read more about our holiday program here.

Stay tuned as we will soon announce our plans to work with Second Harvest Food Bank again this year, including how you can get involved too.
