Reimbursements from HRAs
What types of healthcare expenses can be covered with an HRA?
Sterling HSA offers two types of HRA plans – Basic and Comprehensive. The Basic Plan reimburses for medical expenses only (qualified medical deductible). The Comprehensive Plan reimburses for expenses qualifying under IRS Section 213(d) and includes all qualified medical, dental and vision expenses.
What are the reimbursement rules?
Expenses cannot be reimbursed if they were incurred before the effective date of the HRA. Employers can set the time limits for submitting claims for reimbursements. The date of service, not when the participant pays, determines whether the claim qualifies for reimbursement with the exception of orthodontia expenses.
Does Sterling pay providers directly?
Yes. Unlike most health services administrators, if requested to do so, Sterling will pay the medical provider directly or reimburse the employee for the expense.
Does Sterling provide HRA debit cards?
Yes. Debit cards are provided for the employee and dependents, if covered under the HRA. Cards can be ordered when the HRA is set up. One card is automatically sent to the employee. Additional cards for dependents can be ordered. The first two cards are free. Additional cards or replacement cards (if lost or stolen) are $10 per card. If an employer does not want to provide debit cards for employees under the plan, they can make this choice.
